Salvias are one of San Francisco Botanical Garden's many spectacular collections. Salvias, commonly called sages, are the most numerous of the mints. Over half of the 800 or so species are native to Central and South America. Their flowers have coevolved with specific pollinators. Some use a lever mechenism. When pushed by the pollinator, the pollen filled stamen lowers and ruptures on the insect, who then disperses it. So few plants come in such a variety of colors, shapes, and scents.
