Nightshades at SF Botanical Garden

Nightshades are a large family of plants.  The family includes important foods such as potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers, as well as tobacco and mandrake.  Many nightshades have long, trumpet-like flowers, such as those in the brugmansia (Angel's Trumpets), cestrum (Jessamines), and iochroma (Iochromas) genera.  These three genera are also known for the toxic properties or all their parts, as well as their entheogenic use by South American peoples.
