Proteas at SF Botanical Gardens

The Protea Family includes several well-known genera of plants, including Banksia, Hakea, Leucadendron, Macadamia, and Protea.  This family is found throughout the Southern Hemisphere on all major land masses but Antarctica.  Ancestors of today's Protea Family members would have been alive in the Cretaceous, and thus witnessed by the last groups of dinosaurs.  Banksias are found in Australia, where many of them are endangered.  They are great nectar producers, and thus popular with a variety of animals.  Grevilleas, or spider flowers, are also found in Australia and surrounding land masses.  Their tendency to interbreed leads to many hybrid forms.  Leucadendron were found only in South Africa until their world-wide dispersal by humans.  Many species are known to store their seeds until induced to disperse them by fires.  Proteas, or sugarbushes, are mostly found in the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa.
